A passion for three-dimensional form led me to an MFA degree in Sculpture and teaching art. Designing and making jewelry followed logically. For the past 20 years, I've been making jewelry that draws from my experience of working with metals as a sculptor, color as a painter, and fibers as a weaver. In combining these approaches, there are endless possibilities to create mini-sculptures to be worn.
Each piece begins as an original design idea. Usually I make sketches first and then details evolve more fully in my materials. Emphasis is on one-of-a-kind and limited or small series work. Sterling silver (including Argentium sterling), 14K gold-filled, 18K solid gold wire and sheet are used, often with semi-precious gemstones and pearls.
It's fascinating to explore the linear and textural qualities of my media, and realize a personal sense of shape, structure, and space on such a small scale. The eye and hand of the artist synthesize internal and external experience. The creative process becomes a personal journey of the unconscious merging with the conscious, giving expression to universal aesthetic concerns.
