I have built reproduction Early American furniture for decades and began building Windsor chairs in the 1980's. Most of the wood is cut on my wood lot. The bent parts and spindles are of oak, split and steamed or shaped on a shaving horse. The carved seats are of pine, and the legs and stretchers are turned from maple. The tenons are dried and fitted into green mortises so that they will shrink tightly together, resulting in a sturdy chair.
The finish is built up of several different-colored layers of milk paint and stain, resulting in a chair that looks comfortably antiqued. Chair prices vary from $532 to $616.
